Baby dragonfly. This baby dragonfly took years to come together.
The wings were the problem area. It was hard to find the perfect wings in terms of size and shape. It wasn’t until I came across these wings in 2024, which I bought for another project mind you, that it all came together.
The Bugs Galore DIY Kit comes with supplies to make 4 bugs: Caterpillar, Adult Dragonfly, Baby Dragonfly and Ladybug. This kit is great for makers 3 to 6 years old.
This dragonfly is also fairly easy to put together. And how do you put it together? Check out the photo tutorial below and the DIY video above.
Supplies that come in the DIY kit: 1 dragonfly body (small popsicle stick), 2 pairs of fabric wings, 2 Swarovski crystals eyes, white glue and 1 wood stick.
Additional supplies required but not included as part of kit: coloring tool (I used paint marker) and a black permanent marker (I used a extra fine tip Sharpie)
And supplies recommended but not required: disposable glove, paper towels if using paint and paper to cover your workspace.
First off, cover your work area. Then color the baby dragonfly body with color of choice. Don’t forget to color the edges and bottom.
Once you finish coloring the body, it is time to add the segment detail. The segments look a little like the letter W. Do the best that you can.
Sometimes I will add the line going down the middle and sometimes I stop after I add the W’s. You can do it either way.
Add a little blob of glue towards the top of Baby Dragonfly, just above the segmented parts of the body. Take one of the wings and place it on top of the glue but at a slight diagonal.
Repeat with the other wing placing it in a slight diagonal too but in the opposite direction.
For the final step, it is time to attach the eyes. Add a small dollop of glue above the wings and close to the top edge of the head. Spread the glue a little so that it goes from the right edge to the left edge.
Place the first eye on top of the glue so that it overlaps the right edge a little.
Place the other eye on the left side. Then use the glue stick, the side with no leftover glue, to gently press down the eyes onto the glue and position them correctly. The eyes will overlap the right and left edges of the head and that is correct. Dragonfly eyes are the most buggy of all bug eyes.
